Oil is spawned randomly around the world, in all biomes, as well as in water. It comes in the form of small, medium and large oil deposits. Massive oil spawns do occur, however they are extremely rare. Small oil deposits contain up to 16 buckets of oil and are "common" in the desert biome, having a 3% chance of generating there.

Oil is a dark liquid added by BuildCraft that is found in the Overworld and Mystcraft Ages. Oil can power combustion engines , or can be refined or centrifuged into Fuel or Fuel Cans . Oil is textured like black water. 2 buckets dense oil (optionally convert to dense fuel to remove residue outside of engines, same power, same efficiency) 720,000 MJ total - 48,000 for distilling = 84,000 MJ per bucket. This is better than without the second step. Just burning the heavy oil will net you 480,000. Path 1.5: 1: Oil (cool) -> Gaseous Fuel (cool) + Heavy Oil (cool) 2: Heavy Oil (Cool) -> Heavy Oil (Hot) 3: Heavy Oil (Hot) -> Heavy Oil (searing) Buildcraft oil can be refined into Buildcraft's Fuel which is usable as rocket fuel in Galacticraft. You can use either Buildcraft's refinery or the Galacticraft Refinery to transform Oil into Fuel. If Buildcraft is installed, normally Buildcraft's Oil and Fuel will take the place of Galacticraft's standard Oil and Fuel. cool oil: 50MJ/8B oil. hot oil: 52MJ/8B oil. searing oil: 52MJ/8B oil. So distilling cool oil will save you 2MJ over heating it up. Energy output for all the components of oil, still counting the full 8 buckets, is: 16B of G.Fuel: 240kMJ. 4B of Fuel: 240kMJ. 2B of D.Fuel: 240kMJ

Oil (BuildCraft) Oil is a dark liquid added by BuildCraft that is found in the Overworld and Mystcraft Ages. Oil can power combustion engines, or can be refined or centrifuged into Fuel or Fuel Cans. Oil is textured like black water. It can be picked up with a bucket or other liquid storage, or various kinds of Pumps. Fuel (BuildCraft) Fuel is a liquid introduced by BuildCraft that produces 6 MJ/t when consumed in a Combustion Engine. Medium deposits contain between 100 and 1,000 buckets of oil, large deposits between 2,000 and 17,000 buckets. As well, in Buildcraft v. 3.70+, there are oil fields. They are a separate biome, and have a chance of generating Ocean oil fields, as well as Desert oil fields. Ocean oil fields produce numerous large springs.
